Papakonstantinou selected as ASCE Outstanding Reviewer

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Journal of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems, Part A: Civil Engineering, recently selected Kostas Papakonstantinou, assistant professor of civil engineering at Penn State, as an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 2017 Outstanding Reviewer.

According to ASCE, the journal aims to meet the needs of researchers and engineers wishing to address risk, disaster and failure-related challenges due to many sources and types of uncertainty in planning, design, analysis, construction, manufacturing, operation, utilization and life-cycle management of existing and new engineering systems. The journal reports on the full range of risk and uncertainty analysis state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice relating to civil and mechanical engineering. Part A specifically focuses on the civil engineering aspects of these topics.

Papakonstantinou has been a member of the Penn State faculty since 2015. His research interests include stochastic and structural mechanics, risk assessment and management, inverse methods and optimization, structural health monitoring and earthquake engineering and structural dynamics.

He received a five-year diploma and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and another master’s degree and doctorate in civil engineering from the University of California, Irvine.

Papakonstantinou also won the ASCE Outstanding Reviewer award from the journal in 2014.
