Civil engineering department head elected vice president of Geo-Institute

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Patrick Fox, the John A. and Harriette K. Shaw Professor and Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has recently been elected vice president of the Geo-Institute (G-I). The G-I is one of the nine specialty institutes of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Fox was selected on Oct. 15 at the G-I Board of Governors meeting in Seattle, Wash.
“This appointment is personally very rewarding and a great honor, to serve the Geo-Institute in this capacity,” Fox said.
He has been a member of the G-I since its inception in 1996 and has been on the board of governors, an 8-person group, since 2015. This one-year position will require Fox to assist the president in governing more than 13,000 individual members.
The process for selection for the board of governors is through nationwide consideration and by invitation through existing governors. Fox previously served as treasurer for the organization and is slated to serve as president next year.
“I look forward to working with the other governors over the next several years to increase the delivery of technical content to our members, enhance the quality of our regional and national conferences and strengthen the digital footprint of the Institute to better serve all members,” said Fox.
Fox and other members of the board of governors are guided by the ASCE’s Long-Term Strategic Plan, which helps to increase membership and support members through various opportunities.
The G-I’s overall purpose is to combine the talents and perspectives of geo-professionals to enhance career development through various activities, such as their annual conferences, journals, continuing education programs, awards and networking for all of its members.
