CEE graduate programs do well in U.S. News graduate rankings

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Both the Penn State civil engineering graduate program and the environmental engineering graduate program ranked in the top 25 in the latest annual U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” rankings.

The report, which was released March 14, surveyed 214 graduate programs that grant doctoral degrees across the country.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering faired well with the civil engineering graduate program coming in at No. 21 – down one spot from last year – and the environmental engineering program coming in at No. 15 – improving nine spots from last year.

According to U.S. News & World Report, there are two ways in which graduate programs are ranked. For the six graduate program areas with the largest enrollments – including engineering – U.S. News uses a combination of statistical data and expert assessment data. Statistical surveys of more than 1,970 programs are analyzed as well as reputation surveys, which are sent to more than 16,500 academics and professionals.

Elsewhere in the College of Engineering, three programs – biological engineering, industrial engineering and nuclear engineering – were in the top 10 of their specialty categories and eight programs – biological engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear engineering – improved since last year’s report.
